1. Fake Sheriff Phone Calls
Criminals are impersonating deputies and calling families of individuals recently booked into jail. They claim the person qualifies for a DUI diversion program and ask for approximately $2,800 for bond and an ankle monitor.
Scammers are pulling names from public booking records on county websites and targeting family members.
Law enforcement does not call requesting payment.
2. Jury Duty Warrant Scam
Scammers call residents claiming they missed jury duty and now have a warrant. They demand immediate payment to avoid arrest.
They often impersonate the Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court or the Hillsborough County Clerk of Court.
Courts never collect fines by phone.
3. Toll Road Text Scam
Residents across Florida are receiving texts claiming they owe unpaid tolls from SunPass.
The message contains a link requesting payment.
These links are fraudulent and designed to steal credit card information.
4. Utility Shut-Off Scam
Scammers impersonate electric companies and threaten to shut off power unless payment is made immediately.
Common targets include customers of Duke Energy and TECO Energy.
Utility companies do not demand payment via gift cards or payment apps.
How to Protect Yourself
If you receive a suspicious call or message:
